I've been coming to this zoo for a number of years now for the Great Lakes Brewfest - so my rating is purely on being at the zoo for a beer festival, and not for animals/etc.
Amazing zoo! All of the animals have fun toys to play with and all of the staff are informative and friendly!
For the brew fest this is a fantastic location. I enjoy the open space that's allotted, as well as the flow of the walkways and availability of bathroom facilities. The zoo employees, along with the festival workers, do a great job of setting up and prepping for the event as well as managing the hoard of people that eventually arrive and take over. The facility remains as clean as anyone could expect, trash and whatnot is taken care of pretty quickly/efficiently. The local police and security do a good job of helping keep everything in-check and most "incidents" are handled quickly and out-of-sight from the vast majority of attendees. There's a little access to see some of the animal enclosures - and from that very little I thought it was a pretty nice little zoo...sometime I'll make it back for Zoo-ing rather than festing/drinking.
Don't think I will be buying a membership again.
Parking was a little weird to sort out but after we found it everything was great. I was able to use my membership to a different zoo in a different state and it gave me 50% off. Kids had a blast! And it was so close to the lake that when we were done at the zoo we went down to the beach and played
We came to visit the pigs twice a week last summer. My son LOVES pigs. The young man in the petting zoo last year knew a lot about them and was super friendly. He would always take time to talk to my son about them. I was really disappointed with the staff member working the petting zoo yesterday. She wasn't friendly and had a scowl on her face the entire time. Not the right fit for someone working so closely with children.
The pigs are in the petting zoo, but you are not allowed to touch them. They also seem really bored in their enclosure. They need enrichment, the other animals have TONS of things to keep them busy, but the pigs who are extremely intelligent have absolutely nothing.
Small zoo. Some areas allow for minor interaction with the animals, such as bird feeding and petting goats, etc. My family always enjoys being there. The playground is so much fun! There are plenty of beautiful things to see there.
